Research axis

IRASEC has four main missions, namely:

1) Basic research coordinated by a team of CNRS researchers seconded, lecturers hosted in a delegation, young researchers (PhD students, PhDs and post-doctoral fellows) who can benefit from a grant and / or research support ; In all cases, they are specialists in south-east Asia in political science, economics and social sciences (anthropology, sociology, geography, law, contemporary history).

2) Expertise of contemporary social and economic issues. Based in the different countries of Southeast Asia, Irasec researchers are closer to the realities and social and geopolitical recompositions of the region. Irasec's analyzes go beyond science alone: they are of direct interest to development actors and decision-makers, as well as to a broader public that is open to the contemporary challenges of South-East Asia.

3) Scientific publication: Irasec deploys a diverse range of editorial collections. Whether it concerns national or transnational monographs or online publications (IRASEC Carnet or IRASEC Notes). As a bridgehead for research in Southeast Asia, the Institute brings a cross-disciplinary and multidisciplinary view of the region through its publications. Our books, in French and English, are evaluated by a reading committee and are published in partnership with publishers who are authoritative in the scientific field (Éditions du CNRS, Les Indes savantes, Perrin, NUS Press, ISEAS Publishing, IB Tauris, Palgrave Macmilla, etc.).

4) The transmission of knowledge and the dissemination of knowledge through conferences, symposia and publications. Irasec organizes scientific events with our local partners in the academic centers of the region (universities, seminars of research institutes, Alliances Françaises, etc.) on the occasion of the publication of the works that it coordinates.

While turning to established researchers, the Institute calls on young researchers to renew their themes. To this end, each year Irasec offers two or three field scholarships (for doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows), leading to a publication and 4-month internship opportunities (Master 1 and 2 levels).

Cooperation with universities, major research centers and think tanks in the countries of Southeast Asia is one of Irasec's priorities. This cooperation brings together local researchers with Irasec publications, conferences that punctuate a research project or events related to the launching of a book. Each Irasec researcher based in a South East Asian country is attached to a university or research center, thus contributing to the strengthening of regional cooperation.
