Stéphane Dovert has spent eighteen years in Asia between research in the humanities and diplomacy. He founded the Institute for Research on Contemporary Southeast Asia in 1999. He was then in charge of French cooperation in Burma before being entrusted with the direction of the Pôle de l’Ecrit et des Industries culturelles at the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs. Since September 2010, he has been Counsellor for Cooperation and Cultural Action at the French Embassy in Malaysia. Stéphane Dovert has written or coordinated, under his name or the pseudonym Gabriel Defert, more than ten research works, including “East Timor : Le génocide oublié” (L’Harmattan, 1992), “L’Indonésie et la Nouvelle-Guinée-Occidentale” (L’Harmattan, 1996), “Les Musulmans d’Asie du Sud-Est face au vertige de la radicalisation” (Les Indes Savantes, 2004), “Réfléchir l’Asie du Sud-Est” (Les Indes Savantes, 2004) or “Les Rohingya de Birmanie” (Aux Lieux d’Être, 2007). He has also coordinated a series of country monographs : “Thaïlande contemporaine” (L’Harmattan, 2000, a new edition of which came out in 2011), “Viêt Nam contemporain” (Les Indes Savantes, 2004, republished in 2009) and “Birmanie contemporaine” (Les Indes Savantes, 2008).
