Many NORNG, lauréate des bourses de terrain IRASEC 2020, présentera ses travaux en soutenance en vue de l'obtention d'un doctorat le mercredi 17 décembre 2025 à 9h30 (Inalco – 2, rue de Lille).

Le DICTIONNAIRE khmer de l'Institut bouddhique (IB), aujourd'hui connu sous le nom de « dictionnaire de Samdech CHUON Nath », fut élaboré sous le Protectorat français, instauré après la signature du premier traité avec le Cambodge en 1863. Sa première édition, publiée en 1938 après plus de vingt ans de préparation puisque commencée en 1915, marque une étape majeure dans l'histoire linguistique du pays.
Ouvrage monumental, il a joué un rôle déterminant dans le processus de standardisation de la langue khmère, depuis le début du XXe siècle jusqu'au présent. Notre recherche, à la croisée de la lexicographie, de la lexicologie et des politiques linguistiques, interroge à la fois la construction de cet outil normatif et sa réception par les élites cambodgiennes, dont certaines ont proposé des voies alternatives de modernisation linguistique. En centrant notre réflexion sur la cinquième édition du DICTIONNAIRE de l'IB (1967/1968), nous analysons comment les normes linguistiques khmères ont été construites, perçues et développées dans l'espace intellectuel du Cambodge depuis le début du XXe siècle. Cette étude pluridisciplinaire, permet de questionner les considérations normatives formulées par les intellectuels cambodgiens tant sur le plan linguistique qu'idéologique.

Nous avons le plaisir de partager l'annonce de la soutenance de l'Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches d'Emmanuelle Peyvel, qui se tiendra le vendredi 14 mars 2025 à 8h30 à l'Université Grenoble Alpes, ainsi qu'en visio.

Son dossier d'habilitation comprend :

Volume 1, Apprendre à partir, partir pour apprendre, retraçant mon parcours scientifique.
Volume 2, L'école du tourisme, compilation d'une sélection de mes productions scientifiques.
Volume 3, Villes et visualités touristiques : réflexions depuis les stations d'altitude vietnamiennes, qui constitue un inédit de recherche.

Résumé
Dans une perspective postcoloniale, le volume inédit de cette HDR analyse les stations d'altitude vietnamiennes, depuis leur création par les colons français jusqu'à leur réappropriation par les Kinhs aujourd'hui. À la croisée des études touristiques et urbaines, il interroge le développement de ces petites et moyennes villes nées du tourisme en montagne parachevant la conquête de la « zomia » (Scott, 2009). Ma proposition de travail consiste à les analyser comme des dispositifs visuels au sens foucaldien. M'appuyant théoriquement sur les travaux de J. Urry et de N. Mirzoeff en études visuelles, je démontre que ces stations sont conçues simultanément pour voir et être vu·e, porteuses d'une visualité moderne, pouvant être contestée par des contre-visualités. En cela, ces stations peuvent être comprises comme un mode d'organisation sociale, avec son partage de l'espace, sa division du travail, ses formes de surveillance en contexte autoritaire et ses effets sur les subjectivités. Par cette étude, j'entends contribuer à (re)politiser le regard touristique.

Report on the IRASEC Winter School 2024

The Institute for Research on Contemporary Southeast Asia (IRASEC) held its third Winter Doctoral School from November 25 to December 7, 2024. Dedicated to sustainable development studies in Southeast Asia, the two-week event brought together 20 students in Bangkok and Manila. The organizing committee was made up of IRASEC, the main coordinator, and two partners : the Faculty of Sociology and Anthropology at Thammasat University (Bangkok), and the Center for Integrative Development Studies (CIDS) at the University of the Philippines Diliman (Philippines).

Participants

The organizing committee received 45 applications and selected 20, including M2 students, young PhD students and professionals : 12 women and 8 men from Cambodia (3), Indonesia (1), the Philippines (5), Thailand (4), Vietnam (4), India (2) and the Netherlands (1). Coming from different national backgrounds and with very different profiles, the students are familiarizing themselves with other university practices and discovering new, albeit neighboring, cultural environments, while exploring the local specificities of a common theme.

Supervision and content

The 26 trainers who took turns over the two weeks came from a wide range of backgrounds : universities (U. Thammasat, U. de Chiang Mai, U. Mahidol ; Silpakorn U. ; U. of the Philippines Diliman, Ateneo de Manila ; U. Indonesia, Institut Pertanian Bogor ; Sciences Po Toulouse), research (IRD), development structures (AFD), international agencies (UN-ESCAP) and NGOs, most of them to run one or two course sessions. The main coordinator was Dr Gabriel FACAL, development anthropologist and deputy director of IRASEC.
The courses covered a variety of topics : regional cooperation for sustainable development, financing the socio-ecological transition, climate change, energy transition, local impact of dams or mining, environmental justice, land rights of indigenous communities, archaeology of agroforestry practices, etc. Various methodological tools were explored (role-playing for decision-making in commons management, participatory mapping approaches). Various courses focused on the epistemological and ethical issues involved in the co-construction of knowledge and engaged research.
In line with their thematic interests and to carry out the field exercises, the students were divided into groups of four within five working groups on the following themes : political economy and finance ; risk governance ; knowledge and encapacitation ; informality and subalternity ; land and the commons.
Eight sites were visited by groups of trainees and their supervisors : inter-religious coexistence in Sathorn (Bangkok), an urban community set up along a railroad line (Bangkok), an industrial waste treatment mega-site (Rayong). In Manila, the sites included a slum affected by typhoons and flooding (Quezon City) ; a fishing community destroyed by the reclamation of Manila Bay (Cavite) ; urban transport drivers mobilized in the face of the electric conversion of their vehicles ; a union of informal women workers ; and urban peasants threatened with eviction (Quezon City).
The various courses and fieldwork provided an opportunity to set out the perspectives on development, sometimes under great tension, of local communities, public decision-makers, donors and private players.

Results and outlook

Extension of the training program : the students were very cohesive at the end of the two-week course, and unanimously expressed a desire to deepen and even renew their initial research questions. Publication of the Winter School proceedings, based on the work carried out by the student groups, is planned for 2025.
Contribution to the establishment of research networks in Southeast Asia and strengthening of links between the two partner institutions, across a vast array of scienrtific disciplines : anthropology, sociology, geography, political science, economy, socio-linguistics and archeology.
Cooperation : strengthening links between IRASEC and its local university partners (whose investment was quite remarkable), but also with UN-ESCAP, IRD and AFD.
The success of this winter school, following those of 2022 (Urban Studies in Southeast Asia, Chiang Mai-Yogyakarta) and 2023 (Migration in Southeast Asia, Bangkok-Kuala Lumpur), confirms the choice made by IRASEC's management in 2021 to make this high-level training activity a structuring project for the Institute, complementing its other research and publication activities.
For the years 2025 and 2026, two other doctoral schools are being considered and set up on the following themes : minority languages in Southeast Asia (2025) ; health and social sciences in Southeast Asia (2026).

We are pleased to announce the start of IRASEC's 2024 Winter School on Sustainable Development Studies in Southeast Asia. The training takes place this week in Bangkok and the following week in Manila.

It gathers 20 students from Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Netherlands, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

It is organized by IRASEC in close cooperation with the Faculty of Sociology and Anthropology, Thammasat University and the Center for Integrative Development Studies, University of the Philippines in Diliman.

The purpose of these workshops is to stimulate discourse and exchange regarding research on Southeast Asia within the scope of social sciences and humanities. IRASEC's winter schools are designed to endorse comparative and regional research methodologies, facilitate the interaction of students, and promote co-tutorship and co-supervision of dissertations for early-career researchers in Southeast Asia, particularly those who exhibit an interest in continuing their studies in France. IRASEC is pleased to announce the Second Graduate Students Forum of the UP Department of Anthropology, co-organized with Elisabeth Luquin.

This is an online workshop of graduate students' papers on the theme, “indigenous elements in independent Christian religions of the contemporary Philippines.” The participants/presenters come from a broad range of disciplines such anthropology, history and Philippine Studies with invited discussants who are professors and experienced researchers in those fields. The papers will form the core of the manuscript of the special issue of the Anthropozine : the refereed publication of the H. Otley Beyer Museum of Anthropology under the UP Department of Anthropology.

Après une première semaine passée à Chiang Mai, l'École doctorale d'Hiver UTAB s'est déplacée à Yogyakarta, Java, Indonésie. Elle est accueillie par la Fakultas Teknik, Universitas Gadjah Mada, un des plus prestigieux établissement d'Indonésie. Les participants se lancent demain dans la découverte de cette ville de culture, citée royale dont la forme carrée n'est pas sans rappeler celle de Chiang Mai.
