Following the spraying of Vietnam with Agent Orange during the Second Indochina War, many health and ecological consequences remain in contemporary Vietnam. These aftermaths have given rise to many different forms of mobilization, notably in Vietnam and the United States, but also - and this is much less well documented – in France. In France, these activities are largely structured by the lawsuits brought against the companies that produced Agent Orange. These issues are in constant circulation between France and Vietnam, and also give rise to a number of artistic expressions and political demands for justice for the victims of Agent Orange. Rooted in engaged anthropology, this research proposes to document and investigate contemporary mobilizations in France and Vietnam in favor of the victims of Agent Orange.

Marvin Freyne is a PhD Candidate in Anthropology at Université Paris Cité, affiliated with the Centre Population & Development (CEPED – UMR 196 : Université Paris Cité, IRD, Université Sorbonne Paris Nord, Inserm), University of Social Sciences and Humanities of Ho Chi Minh City, IRASEC, and the EFEO. Supervised by Pr. Laëtitia Atlani-Duault (IRD/CEPED) and Pr. Myriam de Loenzien (IRD/CEPED), his dissertation examines the ongoing mobilizations in Vietnam and France of those affected by Agent Orange. Through this lens, he explores what is to be done about the inexorable aftermath of chemical warfare and ecocide.

Pascale Hancart Petitet is an anthropologist and permanent researcher at the International Unit TransVIHMI (Institut de Recherche pour le Développement, INSERM, Université de Montpellier). Since 2013, her research in Laos work lies within the academic field, at the interface between public health and the arts, and at the intersection of the anthropology of human reproduction, vernacular knowledge and biomedical technologies, gender, migration and infectious diseases. She has developed a strong interest in the co-construction of transdisciplinary research and experiments with innovative approaches for scientific production (forum theatre, photo voice, collective intelligence) and arts and sciences initiatives (radio program, films, dance and theatre performance (https://anthroms.com/).

Pascale Hancart Petitet est anthropologue et chercheuse titulaire à l'unité internationale TransVIHMI (Institut de recherche pour le développement, INSERM, Université de Montpellier). Depuis 2013, ses recherches au Laos s'inscrivent dans le domaine universitaire, à l'interface entre la santé publique et les arts, et à la croisée de l'anthropologie de la reproduction humaine, des savoirs vernaculaires et des technologies biomédicales, du genre, des migrations et des maladies infectieuses. Elle s'intéresse particulièrement à la co-construction de recherches transdisciplinaires et à l'expérimentation d'approches innovantes en matière de production scientifique (théâtre forum, photo voice, intelligence collective) et d'initiatives mêlant arts et sciences (émissions de radio, films, spectacles de danse et de théâtre (https://anthroms.com/).

Souvanxay Phetchanpheng is an anthropologist, associate member of International Research Unit the International Unit TransVIHMI (Institut de Recherche pour le Développement, INSERM, Université de Montpellier). Since 2005, his research focuses on the transmission of knowledge, migration of young people from rural areas to urban areas for educational purposes and the process of social mobility in Laos.
