Strengthening ASEAN, particularly in view of East Timor’s accession.

Regional geopolitics, including Indonesia and Timor-Leste in their regional environment.

Coastal zone planning in the face of environmental risks in ASEAN : change of form and modalities/pace of elaboration ; Environmental risks (pollution, waste, effects of climate change) and their consideration in public policies and services ; Territorial governance, including articulation of powers, conflicts, non-regulatory factors influencing coastal tourism planning.

Coordinated ASEAN response to disasters / humanitarian assistance and relief exercises (HADR).

 

Past research programs

On behalf of IRASEC, she was in charge of Axis 5 : Societies, environment and climate change. In this capacity, she organized several events as part of the IRN-SustainAsia research program (CNRS ; 2018-2023) conducted with 4 other Asian UMIFRES (CEFC Hong Kong, CSH Delhi, IFP Pondicherry, IFRJ-MJF Tokyo), IRD, and regional partners (U. Chulalongkorn and UNUD Bali for Irasec) on “Inclusive growth and sustainable development in Asia : Governance and societies facing environmental challenges”.

She coordinated (2016 - 2019) for IRASEC an international research program selected and funded by the Regional Forum on Climate Change (RFCC ; Bangkok) (and complementary funding) on “Coastal zone governance in a context of rapid tourism urbanization and climate change in Southeast Asia” ; with AIT Thailand, UNTL Timor-Leste, and UNUD Bali Indonesia. Workshops and conferences to disseminate results were organized in Indonesia, France, Thailand and Timor-Leste.

 

Experience

Christine Cabasset, PhD in geography and planning from the University of Paris-Sorbonne IV, has been the deputy director of IRASEC since 2018 after having collaborated on numerous scientific projects of the Institute since 2008. She is also an associate researcher at the Southeast Asia Center (CASE - UMR 8170, CNRS-EHESS-INALCO). A specialist in Indonesia and Timor-Leste, she has served as an advisor to the Ministry of Education and to the UNDP in the latter country. She previously taught several fields of geography (urban, Southeast Asia, population, tourism, etc.) at universities, including Sorbonne Paris IV, INALCO and Evry Val d’Essonne. She is a member of the French Association for Research on Southeast Asia (AFRASE) and was a member of the board (2007-2012).
