This roundtable, organized by IRASEC, the SOSORO Museum, and the Royal University of Law and Economic Sciences, aims to explore the complexity and nuances of the Francophone presence in Indochina and the Pacific region.

The Research Institute on Contemporary Southeast Asia (IRASEC) invites applications for its ASEAN Doctoral Field Research Grant. This grant is open to candidates of all ASEAN nationalities who are currently enrolled in a doctoral program at a university within the ASEAN region and pursuing research on contemporary Southeast Asia.

The grant is intended to support original fieldwork addressing one of the following research themes in one or more ASEAN member States :

This research project explores the Republic of Vietnam’s policies toward ethnic minorities from 1955 to 1975, examining how successive regimes sought to incorporate, control, and militarize minority populations within the framework of nation-building.

IRASEC is offering two grants to support fieldwork research. These grants are open to applicants of all nationalities who are enrolled in a doctoral program at a French university and conducting research on contemporary Southeast Asia. They are intended to support fieldwork related to the applicant’s doctoral research topic. Proposed research projects should offer an original and innovative perspective on Southeast Asia and fall within the disciplinary areas covered by IRASEC’s research activities.

Elisabeth Peyroux, CNRS Research Director, Associate Researcher at IRASEC and Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the Asia Research Institute (ARI) of the National University of Singapore (NUS), will participate in this webinar as part of the “Critical Social AI webinar series,” alongside Bahia Guellai (CNRS@CREATE). They will present interdisciplinary reflections on the challenges of redefining human agency and responsibility from their respective disciplinary perspectives.

Thanawat BREMARD will presente a paper entitled “Pragmatism as social capital : Community responses to urban floods in Thai provincial cities” in “Climate Justice and Green Transition in ASEAN–ROK Cooperation : Community Resilience, Governance, and Cultural Identity” session at The 2026 International Conference of ASEAN Studies.

The Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (FMSH) and the Institut de recherche sur l’Asie du Sud-Est contemporaine (IRASEC) are offering postdoctoral researchers residing in France who defended their PhD dissertation in 2021, a mobility grant to undertake a 2-, 3-, or 4-month research stay in the countries of Southeast Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Vietnam).
