The recent and rapid adoption of pet culture in Southeast Asia is not simply a matter of the spread of the Western model, but rather a process of appropriation and reconfiguration shaped by local social structures and new lifestyles. This article analyzes this transformation through the concept of “multiple modernities,” showing how pet culture fits into societies characterized by the persistence of familism, despite profound demographic, economic, and urban changes.

On August 25 and 26 2026, Elisabeth Peyroux, CNRS Research Director, Associate Researcher at IRASEC and Visiting Senior Research Fellow à l’Asia Research Institute (ARI) de la National University of Singapore (NUS) participated in the workshop “Singapore and the Infrastructural Imagination : Locating the City-State In and Of the World,” organized by the Urban Institute at the Singapore Management University (SMU). She presented a paper entitled “AI as Critical Infrastructure in Singapore : Revisiting the Urban Infrastructure Debates.”

Éric DAUDÉ with Alexandre Cebeillac, Kanchana Nakhapakorn & Richard E. This paper analyzes savings practices and attitudes within a community living in extreme poverty that has taken up residence in the North Cemetery in Manila, Philippines.

On 9 and 10 July, the inaugural symposium of the International Research Network (IRN), funded by the CNRS, “Rethinking Urban Planning and Transitions under Resource Scarcity : Indo-Pacific Cities within Planetary Limits” (RUPTuRS, 2026–2030), was held in Bangkok.

Artistically coordinated by Kyar Pauk, a leading figure in Myanmar’s contemporary cultural scene now living in exile, and introduced by Chloé Baills (Ph.D. candidate, EHESS), Rebel Art : Myanmar Artists Respond to Repression explores contemporary artistic expression and resistance in Myanmar following the military coup of February 1, 2021. The works of twenty-two photographers, painters, illustrators, and poets each offer a personal perspective on the experience of the Spring Revolution.

L’IRASEC accueille chaque année trois stagiaires pour une durée de quatre mois à Bangkok (Thaïlande). Ce stage à plein temps offre aux étudiants l’opportunité de travailler dans un laboratoire de recherche en sciences humaines et sociales sur le sud-est asiatique contemporain. Les périodes de stages sont : janvier-avril, mai-août et septembre-décembre.

La date limite pour l’envoi des dossiers de candidature au stage 4 janvier au 30 avril 2027 est le 15 septembre 2026, mais nous invitons les candidats à postuler dès à présent.
