IRASEC Scholarships

These grants are open to applicants of all nationalities who are enrolled in a doctoral program at a French university and conducting research on contemporary Southeast Asia. They are intended to support fieldwork related to the applicant’s doctoral research topic. Proposed research projects should offer an original and innovative perspective on Southeast Asia and fall within the disciplinary areas covered by IRASEC’s research activities :

  • Political transitions : political cultures, civil societies, ethnic and religious nationalisms
  • Territorial issues (maritime and terrestrial areas, natural resources, sustainable cities, land policies)
  • Social dynamics in South-East Asia : law, education, health, place and status of women, migration
  • ASEAN : economic prospects and regional integration
  • Societies and Environments, Climate Change

The selection and evaluation of applications, as well as the designation of the grant recipients, are the responsibility of the Laboratory Council, which holds full authority in this matter. Each grant consists of a lump-sum award of €3,000, paid in a single installment upon signing the contract. Having additional sources of funding is considered an advantage in the selection process.

Grant recipients commit to submitting a research paper within six months after completing their fieldwork. After approval and possible editorial revision, this paper will be published on IRASEC’s website, either in the “IRASEC Discussion Papers” (short version) or “IRASEC Occasional Papers” (long version) section. This paper is not a field report, but a genuine research output designed to contribute to the researcher’s academic development.

Grant recipients automatically become affiliated PhD candidates or postdoctoral researchers at IRASEC for a period of two years. They may, if they wish, be hosted at IRASEC’s premises in Bangkok and take part in the institute’s activities.
