After the 2010 Merapi volcano eruption, a new risk management program has been created by the Indonesian government for the victims, which associates risk mitigation and livelihood’s recovery after disaster. This program aims to resettle all inhabitants of the prone disaster area in a safer area. In this presentation, I propose to firstly analyze the goals of this policy and its consequences on Merapi south flank villagers’ everyday life and activities. This analysis will enable us to explore the paradoxes in terms of risk management which emerge from the application of this resettlement program. It will also show how these paradoxes do reveal different representations and practices about the disaster prone area, Merapi volcano, and volcanic risk among the state institutions, the scientifics and the Merapi inhabitants.
