International conference « Ethnicity, Asia-Pacific and French Scholarship » (Kuala-Lumpur)

François Robinne, Director of IRASEC, participated as an invited researcher in the international conference Ethnicity, Asia-Pacific and French Scholarship which took place in Kuala Lumpur on 23, 24 and 25 April 2014. The title of his talk was ’Nation-State versus Ethnic-State in Southeast-Asia’.
This conference is the result of a partnership between the Institute of Ethnic Studies, the French Embassy in Malaysia and the Malaysia France University Centre.
Coordinated by Eric Olmedo, senior research fellow, Institute of Ethnic Studies (KITA), the event brought together several renowned Malaysian and French researchers, including Prof. Shamsul Amri Baharuddin (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia), Prof. Jean-Loup-Amselle (EHESS, Paris), Prof. Anthony Reid (ANU, Canberra) as well as Mr. Bruno Suzzarelli, Director of the MUCEM (Museum of European Civilisations of the Mediterranean) in Marseille.
The first day was devoted to a debate on the theme "Multiethnicity and National Identity".
The second day was devoted to a colloquium bringing together 11 Malaysian, Indonesian, Australian and French speakers on the theme "Ethnicity, Asia Pacific and French Scholarship".
The third day was devoted to a second debate on the theme "Art as ethnic catalyst or as ethnic transcent ?" at the National Museum in Kuala Lumpur.
